In the wine world, social and environmental concerns, such as the search for healthy products and soil preservation, have led winegrowers to adopt sustainable agriculture. In response to these new expectations, organic viticulture has emerged, transforming farms. It is characterized by a vine culture which favors natural processes of exploitation and transformation of the grapes. Organic viticulture seeks to maintain the natural balance of crops and excludes the use of chemicals and GMOs.
Organic viticulture involves dealing with nature
The principles of organic viticulture offer many advantages, but make winemakers more dependent on environmental conditions. The characteristics of the grape vary from year to year depending on the climate. During hot or dry seasons, winegrowers must be ingenious to encourage the growth of the grapes. They are implementing techniques such as root praline, optimizing equipment settings, and using sheep to manage grass and leaf removal. Other methods include biodynamic composting, wood disease prevention, and planting flower strips. This approach stimulates innovation and transforms the wine industry.
The transition to organic farming is a real challenge for producers
Switching to organic farming represents a real challenge for wine growers. As with any business, they are faced with economic realities. The time required to work in the vines is greater, and fruit production is often reduced. This makes profitability more difficult to achieve with organic viticulture.
A. de Fussigny puts ecology at the heart of his commitment. The brand wants to give meaning to consumer purchases. It values the origin of products, responsible sourcing and support for local producers. Each action aims to evolve the image of organic cognac, by placing the purchase of an organic spirit in a quest for taste pleasures that provide the consumer with authentic and transparent experiences.
The production of organic cognac requires respect for natural balances
Within Maison A. de Fussigny, the production of organic Cognac, for example, takes shape through an activity that respects the natural balance of cultures. Our choices in terms of glassware are made consciously, with a view to reducing greenhouse gas emissions linked to the manufacture of the product and its transport. Less glass means fewer raw materials to extract, less degradation of the sourced ecosystem and less energy consumed for its production. It is also a final product that is lighter to transport, and therefore consumes less CO2.
The bottles of our three organic cognacs VS, VSOP, XO are today among the lightest bottles on the market. In this dynamic, via the manufacture of a new mold, our XO carafe, a reference at A. de Fussigny, was reduced by 130 grams. That is the equivalent of 10 trucks less each year to ensure its transport.
Transparent approach that influences all the House’s standards
Our organic approach, our desire for transparency, is a global work in order to generate the most positive impact possible on the entire value chain. We want to create a virtuous circle with all stakeholders in the organic spirits sector, with a view to promoting its development.
In this sense, between 2017 and 2022, A. de Fussigny increased the share of dry materials purchased in France from 50% to 85% – materials used for example for caps and boxes. The company now makes 100% of its purchases within 1,500 km of the production site. Our vodka in particular is produced from wheat grown according to organic farming standards, 40 km from us. We are the first to source this way.
Beyond the production chain, A. de Fussigny plans to take a further step in biodiversity by greening the facade of his building. A renewed freshness which illustrates that which the company wants to bring to the natural cognac sector.
Discover our new range of Organic Cognacs: Pure Organic
We are proud to present the Pure Organic range. Pure Organic is a collection of 100% organic cognacs, designed to celebrate 20 years of excellence with our VSOP, launched in 2001. A pioneer in organic farming, this range is now enriched with new references.
The collection now includes a VS, a VSOP, and an XO, made from wines produced exclusively by certified organic winegrowers, without any additives. Like a natural photograph without a filter, the color of these cognacs depends solely on the careful aging and quality of the selected oak barrels. No modifications are made, ensuring impeccable quality.
The result ? A unique tasting, subtle and delicate, with spring floral notes. Each cognac in the Pure Organic range is natural and committed to positive change in the world of spirits.
The range is distinguished by its “eco-designed packaging”. It includes one of the lightest bottles on the market (550g), a compostable wood and cork stopper, a plant-based strip made of wood pulp, an eco-responsible sliver and a recyclable flowered paper label. This minimalism of materials highlights a bold design, in harmony with the values of Pure Organic.
“Organic Cognac”, “eco-design”, “natural and authentic” are the key words of this new collection.
